Comedy drama set in working-class Detroit and tells of a large Polish-American family run by matriarch Jadzia Pzoniak. She has five children, four obedient sons and one daughter, Hala, who is rebellious and independent. Happily married to a bakery worker, Jadzia has been having an affair for years with Roman. Hala sneaks off to see her handsome neighbour, Russell, in the night resulting in her pregnancy. Russell is forced to marry Hala, and a large Polish wedding is planned.
