The aged Lord Hidetora gives up his throne in favour of his eldest son, but is then driven out of his kingdom leaving it to be torn apart by greed and ambition. Kurosawa's version of King Lear remains faithful to the original in many respects, with breathtaking battle sequences and larger than-life performances. Ran is the Japanese word for 'chaos'.
