An outstanding film which reeks of character and atmosphere, this wartime classic is memorable for both it's beginning as the camera wanders through an abandoned air base peering in at the details of everyday life and the camera technique which remains almost uniquely on terra firma. Perfect performances all round and Rattigan's script scores a direct hit by showing the comic differences and common humanity between the Brits and US airmen. Unmissable.
