Mike Leigh's BAFTA Award winning hilarious and bittersweet comedy. Hortense is a young, black optician whose adoptive parents have recently died. She is friends with Cynthia, an unmarried mother with a difficult daughter Roxanne. Cynthia's brother Maurice is a successful wedding photographer living comfortably in suburbia with his snooty wife Monica. Determined to re-unite the family Maurice holds a barbecue party for Roxanne's 21st birthday but things go slightly awry when Cynthia arrives with Hortense.
