Boxset containing two programmes. Shackleton And Scott - Rivals For The Pole - Documentary detailing the rivalry between Shackleton and Scott, the consequences of which pushed each man to the limits of human endurance. Escape From Antarctica - In 1914 Ernest Shackleton and a crew of 27 men set out aboard the ship, the Endurance, to try and be the first people to cross the continent of Antarctica via the South Pole. Instead, Endurance became locked in the ice fields and was finally crushed by the ice. Shackleton and his men embarked on a treacherous 850 mile journey across open seas in a 22-foot boat. Their journey was recreated in 1997 by a team of Irish sailors and climbers. This documentary presents the extreme and deadly nature of polar exploration and illustrates the psychology of adventurers who tackle such dangerous exploits.
