Adaptation of David Guterson's best-selling novel. When a local fisherman, Carl is found dead in his nets with a serious head wound, suspicion falls upon another fisherman, Kazuo. As Kazuo's trial commences, post-war anti-Japanese sentiments are still running high. The local reporter, Ishmael finds himself involved as the trial strikes a deep emotional chord when he finds that his ex-lover Hatsue is linked to the case.
