An uplifting tale of courage and faith set against the rugged beauty of the New Zealand coast. For hundreds of years the Whangra people have been lead by a Chief, the direct descendant from the legendary Whale Rider. Each time the succession is hereditary and leadership always falls to the first born son. This time, however, there is no first born son but a bright young girl - much to the annoyance of her grandfather. As she grows up she must battle against her grandfather and hundreds of years of tradition to achieve her rightful position.
