Romantic drama based on the book by Henry James and set in London and Venice in 1910. Since the death of her mother, Kate has been living with her dissolute, opium addict father. Her Aunt Maud decides that it is time for Kate to regain her rightful place in society, hopefully as the wife of Lord Mark. Although Kate very much likes the idea of having money and is attracted to a high social position, she also happens to be in love with a penniless journalist Merton Densher.
